IICSA published its final Report in October 2022. This website was last updated in January 2023.

Effective leadership of child protection

A thematic inquiry into effective leadership of child protection within institutions that fall within the Inquiry’s Terms of Reference. (This investigation is now complete.)

Across its investigations, the Inquiry has heard evidence of institutional failing and poor leadership. Often, policies and practices aimed at protecting chidren from sexual abuse have not been implemented well, if at all. The Inquiry considered it necessary to conduct a thematic investigation into effective leadership of the institutions that fall within the Inquiry’s Terms of Reference.

This investigation built on the Inquiry’s findings on leadership in the Interim Report and investigation reports. It focused on practical experiences of leadership and management and examined how effective leadership can better protect children from sexual abuse.

Given its thematic nature, this investigation did not focus on any individual case studies or particular institution. It explored issues such as those identified in the definition of scope.
