Public hearings on the Children in Custodial Institutions investigation

4 July 2018

The Inquiry’s first public hearings into allegations of child sexual abuse of children in custodial institutions is taking place from 9 to 20 July

The Inquiry is holding public hearings into allegations about the sexual abuse and exploitation of children held in secure units.

This investigation will examine the prevalence and culture of child sexual abuse in custody as well as the institutional responses to those allegations.

The investigation will also ask what the current safeguarding and child protection policies in institutions responsible for detaining children are, as well as any inspection and regulatory regimes.

The public hearings will analyse a selection of allegations of recent sexual abuse of a child in custody, including allegations in relation to children detained at Her Majesty’s Young Offender Institutions at Feltham and Werrington; Medway and Rainsbrook Secure Training Centres; Vinney Green Secure Unit; and Aycliffe Secure Centre.

The public hearings will take place between 9 and 20 July at 10.30am each day at the IICSA hearing centre, 18 Pocock Street, London SE1 0BW.

Please note, Thursday 19 July is a non-sitting day for public hearings, we will however be holding a preliminary hearing in relation to our Children in the care of Nottinghamshire Councils investigation.

The timetable for the first week will be published on Friday 6 July on our website.

All the evidence, including transcripts and videos from these hearings will be available on our website afterwards: www.iicsa.org.uk
