D.7: Inclusive approaches

86. Recognising that children from ethnic minority groups and LGBTQ+ children, among others, were under-represented in referrals to Barnardo’s from other agencies, Barnardo’s has since 2019 invested approximately £1 million in designing inclusive new approaches and processes with a range of marginalised children.[1] Barnardo’s aim is to improve its ability to identify and respond to exploitation and to support the wider sector to adopt these approaches. For example, it is developing resources on identifying and working with Pakistani Muslim children.[2] Improved understanding and representation of ethnic minority communities within the agencies working to prevent and respond to child sexual exploitation may contribute towards their success in protecting children.
